Farewell to Prof. Barbara Kappes
On May 16th, we bid farewell to Prof. Barbara Kappes, who will retire after an illustrious career. Prof. Kappes has been an integral part of our institution from its inception, significantly shaping our institute’s profile and reputation.
Throughout her tenure, Prof. Kappes dedicated her research to the investigation of Plasmodium falciparum, making fascinating strides in malaria biotechnology and establishing this field at FAU. Her scientific contributions have not only advanced our understanding but have also established a strong foundation for future research.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Prof. Kappes was a staunch advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. In her role as the Women’s Representative at the Faculty of Engineering, she tirelessly championed fair gender balance, setting a high standard for all to follow. Her efforts made a lasting impact, creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for everyone. As such it is not surprising that she invited her dear colleague Prof. Petra Rohrbach from McGill University (Canada) to her farewell to present how gender balance has been institutionalized in North America’s universities – a quest that both aim to achieve in different parts of the world.
We are profoundly grateful to have shared such a long and meaningful journey with Prof. Kappes. She inspired both her colleagues and the countless students who have had the honour of learning from her. As we congratulate her on her well-deserved retirement from scientific duties, her influence will remain a guiding force for years to come.
